Why do people spend so much time on their appearance and weight loss/dieting?

Question by Tori N: Why do people spend so much time on their appearance and weight loss/dieting?
Why do people care so much about what they look like?
Forbidding themselves to eat certain foods, exercising like crazy, spending tons of money on designer clothes, makeup, hair products?

Why do people care about this stuff so much? What do they think they’re going to get out of it?
Is this the only way to get respect from people? By “looking good”? Is this the only way to get a date?

Because it matters not just socially, but for one’s health. You feel really good when you are thin versus when you are overweight too.

well i care about my apperance because i care about how i present myself in front of others, i dont really care what ppl say i just care about how i look because looking raggedy and dirty presents an image that you dont take care of yourself and im not that type of person
apperance is not the only way to gain respect and i dont think that a person can gain respect from their apperance it just doesnt seem right to me
also not everyone cares about their apperance or others some ppl may like you for the person you are inside
but it varies from person to person everyone is different

because we live in a shallow society and no one wants to be alone so most of us try desperately to conform to what is considered normal or hot in a vain attempt to arouse as many people in close proximity as possible which by design should ensure we have more options to find a suitable mate. its all bullshit if you ask me though.

Right or wrong, people judge you and assume things about you based on your appearence before you open your mouth. We’re more shallow than we like to admit. Plus eating right and exercising regularly is good for your overall health, unless of course you eat contaminated vegatables or tear your ACL playing basketball or something.

Is looking good the only way to get a date? No. But if you don’t look good, you probably won’t be able to attract a very desirable partner. Looks matter.

“Why do people spend so much time on their appearance and weight

loss/dieting?” . . .

something we have no control over . . .

” Ego ” considerate at best, a necessary evil,

with out it there’d be no people on the planet,

then again there’d be no wars either, hummm,

not such a bad idea, any way, as i was saying,

consequently mother nature couldn’t care less

how much one earns on wall street, or how

well one plays the piano, but that we all take

time out now and then, to make our selves

prim and proper so as to impress one of

the opposite gender so as to possibly make

more wall street workers and piano players,

so she invented a fool proof method, that

even on our laziest day, we’ll stop at nothing,

to out do another when it comes to getting

what we know instinctively has to be gotten . . .

btw, the fool proof method? ” A Mirror ”

like it or not, it works every time . . .
