One of the diet products becoming very popular at the moment are
herbal weight loss supplements. These come in many different types
and make strong claims about helping you to strip the fat from your
body in no time. Because they are made from natural ingredients, many
people think that they will be a safe way to boost their progress
to getting a thinner body. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
Some herbal supplements can actually endanger your health. Here we
will review some of the main types on the market and tell you which
ones you should avoid.
Thermogenic Herbs
Herbal weight loss supplements containing Thermogenic
Herbs are often described as stimulants. Their effect on the
body is to speed up body functions such as boosting your metabolism
(the rate at which you burn fat) as well as increasing heart and
breathing rate. Other claims for this type of herbal weight loss
supplement include suppressing your appetite so you won’t crave
food between meals, lowering your cholesterol, controlling fatty acids
and increasing your body’s production of heat.
Examples of Thermogenic herbal Supplements
Piper Nigrum (also known as black pepper and
maricha) is found in some herbal weight loss pills and is taken
to accelerate your metabolism and produce an aesthetic effect in
the stomach said to decrease your appetite.
Garcinia Camboglia (also known as Brindall Berry
or Hydroxycitric Acid - HCA). This herbal weight loss supplement
is created from a small fruit native to Asian countries. The effect
of taking this herb is to speed up the rate at which your body
burns fat for fuel during exercise.
More well-known herbal weight loss supplements
used to help with weight loss include Green Tea, which reports show
can increase the metabolism and help to burn fat without significantly
raising your heart rate. Slimming teas also claim to prevent the
sugar in your diet from being stored as fat by your body, by regulating
insulin production (the hormone responsible for managing blood
sugar levels).
Other herbal weight loss said to promote the
slimming effect include Cayenne which stimulates digestion and increases
your metabolism, and Seaweed which can stimulate the thyroid function
(the part of your body that regulates fat storage).
Whilst most reports claim that herbal weight
loss supplements are safe for use in slimming pills, you should be
aware that many hyped-up claims are associated with this type of product.
You should remember that it is considered safe for the average person
to lose up to two pounds of body fat per week. Any weight loss product
that makes claims of more rapid fat loss should be considered very
carefully. If in doubt, you should consult a doctor and check with
the FDA who will often issue reports and warnings.
Some herbal weight loss supplements to avoid include:
Diuretic or water-reducing herbal weight loss.
These are often used by competitive body builders, but have been recommended
to people looking to lose weight. The theory that water adds to what
you weigh, so reducing the water retained by the body will magically
reduce your weight. Whilst this is true, your body requires water
to function correctly, and once you stop taking the supplement the
weight will return.
Herbal laxatives. These have been linked to
serious health problems and are not recommended for herbal weight
loss purposes. Some ingredients to avoid are cascare, senna, blackthorn.
Ma huang or ephedra is a potent stimulant which has been linked to
serious or potentially fatal heart problems, strokes and seizures.
For your own safety always check the label of
any herbal weight loss supplement to see what it contains and make
sure there are no known side-effects before embarking on a course
of treatment. Sometimes the risks are increased if you are taking
herbal weight loss supplements in combination with other medicines.
As always, if in doubt consult your doctor.
